Citation Helper for MathOverflow

An enhanced citation tool for MathOverflow and Math StackExchange that makes it easy to insert properly formatted mathematical references into your posts.

Features

🔍 Quick Citation Search

Search the zbMATH database directly from the MathOverflow/Math StackExchange editor. Simply click the citation button and enter your search query (author name, paper title, or keywords).

📚 Comprehensive Results

Get detailed information for each result including:

  • Full author list
  • Paper title with LaTeX formatting
  • Journal/publication details
  • Direct links to DOI, zbMATH, and arXiv (when available)

📋 BibTeX Generation

NEW in v2.2.2: When you select a paper, the script automatically generates a properly formatted BibTeX entry that includes:

  • Author information
  • Title, journal, volume, and page numbers
  • DOI and arXiv identifiers
  • zbMATH reference number
  • One-click copy to clipboard

✨ Formatted Citation Insertion

Citations are inserted in a clean, readable markdown format:

_Authors_, [**Title**](link). Source ([ZBL######](zbmath_link), [arXiv:####.####](arxiv_link)).

🎯 Easy to Use

  1. Click the citation button in the editor toolbar
  2. Type your search query
  3. Browse results with preview links
  4. Select a paper to see its BibTeX
  5. Click "Insert Citation" to add it to your post

How It Works

This script integrates with MathOverflow's and Math StackExchange's editor interface, adding a citation button to the toolbar. It queries the zbMATH citation matching API to find mathematical publications and formats them according to the standards commonly used on these sites.

Compatibility

  • Works on MathOverflow (mathoverflow.net)
  • Works on Math StackExchange (math.stackexchange.com)
  • Requires jQuery (already loaded on these sites)
  • Requires MathJax (already loaded on these sites)

Version History

  • v2.2.2: Added automatic BibTeX generation and copy-to-clipboard functionality
  • Earlier versions: Citation search and insertion
